Numbers In Bible

There are many different numbers that are in the bible. But this will just cover a few of them. You have 1 which is the most basic number, but also reminds us that the Lord God is One. Then 3 is easily recognized as the number of God because he is three persons in one God. Some may say three is the number of the Holy Trinity, but what is the differnce. These people will say the number 7 is the number of God. But really the number 7 might be better seen as God in or with Creation. God acts in Creation by number 7. 7 Days of Creation. 70 years of Exile. 7 years for Jubilee.

3+4=7 God plus creation equals God with Creation.

Oh, wait I have to tell you the number 4 represents Creation. 4 winds or 4 corners of creation. There are 4 rivers in the Garden of Eden. 4 ends to a standard compass (without the extra divisions of N, S, E and W).

3*4=12 God multiplied creation equals God's people.

This should be simple to see 12 as the number for God's people. There are 12 Apostles. There are 12 tribes of Israel. Then in Revelation the 144,000 is 12*12*1,000. But then I have to explain what 1,000 means. Well let us start with the number 10.

The Ten Commandments break down in the Lutheran and Catholic tradition 3+7. Three commandments refer to the relationship between man and God. (No Other gods, Name, Sabbath) The next seven refer to the relationship between man and his neighbors or God with Creation. (Parents, Murder, Adultery, Steal, Testimony, Covet things, Covet relationships) But the Ten Commandments sum up all the commandments.

10 becomes a number of Completeness. 10*10=100 which is completely complete. 10*10*10=1,000 which is fully complete. Therefore, 144,000 would mean all of God's people throughout time and space. 40 years/days would be the completion of a period for creation generally of preparation or punishment. 400 years would just expand on the completeness. 70 years would complete the time of exile and be complete Jubilee (thus the decree of Cyrus).

There are other numbers in the bible but just something to think about. Thank you.

Biblical Marriage

Marriage is defined in Genesis as a man clinging to his wife and the two becoming one flesh. This definition is standardized even in the New Testament by both Jesus and St Paul. Therefore, we have generally said Marriage is defined as one Man and one Woman being joined together in a life long union. Most people think that this Marriage union is created through a man dressed in black and woman dressed in white walking down an aisle to be joined together before some kind of altar. But this is only a ceremony of marriage.
