Take the Text Seriously
In response to a Facebook Meme about taking the scripture seriously verses taking the Koran seriously. I was brought to remark, about the fact that the Koran in several places appeals to Holy Scripture in order to confirm its statements to be true.
Lutheran Hour Ministry's: Men's Network program The Challenge of Islam (Part 2): Defending the Christian Faith identifies several passages of the Koran which appeals to scripture for validity and confirmation. Koran 5:43-51 appeals to the Torah which was confirmed by Jesus and the Gospel was given as a book of Truth. Koran 21:105 and surrounding appeal to various stories and quotations from the Old Testament. Koran 10:94 and surrounding appeal to the book of truth to stave off any doubt people might have with these new revelations. Koran 3:55 and 61:14 even report that the followers of Jesus will be held up as true believers.
While these passages may be difficult for Muslims to understand, there are Biblical Passages that are difficult for Christians to understand. But there is a strong appeal to search the scriptures for the truth. This is a Godly thing, just as St Paul looks at the bereans who search the scriptures in order find out whether what St Paul is saying. St Paul does not need to say your Old Testament manuscripts are corrupt or man has twisted them, because St Paul recognizes them to be true, and he is speaking the truth.
As Christians today we should continue to search the scriptures. Not believing everything we hear or see. But confirming all things with the eye-witness testimony of the scripture. Likewise we should take seriously the path which has brought these texts to us. Confirming the early writing of the Gospels. Confirming the accuracy of the manuscripts we have today. The Bible is true, take it seriously and search it. Thank you
