Forgiveness (Part One)

We are forgiven people who have been called to forgive. Therefore, we have been instructed to pray: And Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. It is easy for us to often say we are sorry, or even ask for someone to forgive our sins. It is a lot harder for us to forgive someone else.

Most Sunday mornings we probably give little thought to the confession of our sins. There is even the childhood mix up between: heartily and hardly. "But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, ..." Many of us are hardly sorry for our sins, as we continue to run toward our sins. Likewise, the joke playing on the words of Jesus, "Get behind me Satan, and PUSH."

But we are sinful people. We have sinned in thought word and deed. We have sinned by the things we have done (commission) and by the things we have left undone (omission). One of the most grievous sins we all commit is forgetting to forgive others.

You are a forgiven people who are called to forgive. Many mission projects are set forth to help grow and expand God's Kingdom, but the greatest mission of all was the one that provided you with forgiveness. Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins. He took your transgressions upon himself. He did this to save you and all the world. Upon Christ Crucified for the forgiveness of sins, the Kingdom of God is built.

You are a forgiven people who are called to forgive. Thus, one of the easiest and hardest missions we have as Christians is to forgive others. This means telling our family members they have sinned. This means calling our friends sinners. We are not called to accept everyone for who they want to be. But we are supposed to forgive them when they are not who God wants them to be. But if we are going to truly proclaim forgiveness to them, they have to know they are a sinner.

You are a sinful people who are called to tell others about sin. You alone know all the ways you have failed to live up to the life God expects you to live. But the more you see how you have failed. The more joyfully we get to tell you, YOU ARE FORGIVEN. What greater message is there? You have been forgiven by the blood of Jesus, shed for you for the forgiveness of your sins.

You are a forgiven people who are called to forgive. Thus, we pray: And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Thank you.
