Genesis 1:1-2 Pre Creation account
Another thought I ran into recently was the idea that Genesis 1:1-2:3 is the first Creation Account. Now Most bibles you look at our outlines separate Genesis 1:1-2 from Genesis 1:3-2:3. But this was an interesting thought of connecting these two together. The way I would understand it is that everything was dark without light. Thus, in Genesis 1:1 you have the basic frame of the earth with the angels and heavens created. The spirit hovers over the waters which made up the earth. But everything was not orderly yet. It was like God created the blob of playdough and now then the word would shape it and develop creation.
This of course sounds a lot like the idea of the Father being separate from Creation and has to send the son to relate to creation. This stemmed out of the Heresy that Jesus was a step lower than God. These are developments from Gnosticism and Arianism. But I would think it is more characteristic of showing the Sons active role in creation. But the people I talked to about this idea were not making distinctions between the Father Son and Holy Spirit roles in Creation (stepping away from a Modelistic understanding). But this is where the real difficult comes even for me. What do you do with verse 2?
Verse 1-2 is Introduction: This would lead me to think verse 2 becomes a reflection of the rest of scripture or more connected with chapter 3. The "without form and void" are part of the darkness that covers all creation after the fall.
Genesis 1:1-2:3 creation Account: This would lead me to think that verse 2 is talking about something being incomplete with verse one. There is developing of this formless and void mass which is necessary. Thus, the word speaks to complete the task. If you look at the six days that follow this would lead to additional time before time existed where creation took place. This could also lead into a Gnostic demiurge or Arian's vision of Christ (a time when he was not) or even partial Modelism with different roles in creation. "God was directly involved in not only the action of creating (bringing into existence out of nothing) but also in the work of bringing form and order to that which He had created. There is no place in the biblical view of creation for abstract and impersonal process of evolution. The Bible affirms that the Father directly and intentionally called the order of the cosmos into being through the Son." (TLSB)
Genesis 1:1 Creation Account One: This leaves more a feel for the understanding of an introduction. You allow verse two to reflect chapter 3. You can also leave open may other interpretations. I have not found a great explanation for verse 2 anywhere. If you have one please tell me. Thank you.
