Unity of Scripture

Arland Hultgren talks about many different problems in the Lectionary. One point is more interesting to me to talk about the unity of Scripture. "The first area of concern has to do with the unity and diversity of the Bible. In the present system of theological education, in which there is usually a rather clearly defined division of labor between the Old Testament and New Testament studies and in which the atomizing effects of the historical-critical approach accent the diverse and pluralistic, there is sufficient cause to wonder whether the seminary graduate is equipped to handle the question of the unity of the Bible in a critical and responsible way."

Most universities and Seminaries distinguish greatly between New Testament and Old Testament. Now this could be because they need to view differently. But the most prominent division is the languages they are written in (Hebrew and Greek). These also have a cultural difference, but then so does Genesis.

People coming out the Seminary should be equipped to talk about the unity of the Bible. They need to think critically about textual connections. One needs to know there is an overall connection and unity in the Bible through Jesus Christ. All people should be able to explain these things. God breathed the entire scripture. God still helps his people in many and various ways. I think preachers need to explain how these texts do relate. But this should also be reflected by those who developed the Lectionary. Why do you think these texts relate to one another?

If one is to update or redo the Lectionary, they need to explain their reasoning for selecting the texts which they have selected. They should also show the user the connections which they see in the texts. One would even think that they should give further options for people preaching on the non-controlling text. This opens us not only to more passages of Scripture but also to better record and teaches people the full counsel of God. Thank you.

The Death of the Holy Innocents

Many people die for what they believe in. Some die for righteous people. But these chosen few die on behalf of the one who will save us all. These children have all sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God. But these children die on account of the Christ Child. Many people have been martyred because they confessed the faith. These children did not stand or even get a chance to stand. They were cut down because they were seen as the threat to King Herod. Rachael mourns for her children. Rachael died giving life to Benjamin near Bethlehem. Rachael now weeps as all the children of this town are slaughtered. But just as Rachael died giving birth to life. Biblical Marriage

Marriage is defined in Genesis as a man clinging to his wife and the two becoming one flesh. This definition is standardized even in the New Testament by both Jesus and St Paul. Therefore, we have generally said Marriage is defined as one Man and one Woman being joined together in a life long union. Most people think that this Marriage union is created through a man dressed in black and woman dressed in white walking down an aisle to be joined together before some kind of altar. But this is only a ceremony of marriage. The Bride and bridegroom are actually joined together through what is known as consummation, or proper sexual relations.  Thus, St Paul can even talk in reference to a marriage bed.
