Second Limitation

Sundberg gives a list of Three specific Limitations of the Lectionary in his Article. "2. The use of three disparate texts causes insurmountable hermeneutical difficulties for the preacher and the congregation. The temptation to relate the texts to each other, fostered by the lectionary's effort to make the Old Testament and gospel readings analogous, is strong for the preacher and nearly overwhelming for the congregation. This discourages serious exegesis."

I find it interesting to hear the phrase, "serious exegesis." The Lectionary does lead people to make connections that may not be there. But one must remember the entire Scripture is connected in Christ. The entire scripture is one. All these passages do have a connection together. Thus, even those with the vaguest connection can be draw together.

I would finally encourage that there is a difficulty here with different texts, but at the same time we need to hear a greater amount of scripture. We need to have three lessons that connect and relate to one another in some way. This does not mean our exegesis should be pour but that we should look at each text individually and then with its place in the whole. Also connecting the text to the season or other things happening in the world, these are the duties of the preacher. Thank you.

The Death of the Holy Innocents

Many people die for what they believe in. Some die for righteous people. But these chosen few die on behalf of the one who will save us all. These children have all sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God. But these children die on account of the Christ Child. Many people have been martyred because they confessed the faith. These children did not stand or even get a chance to stand. They were cut down because they were seen as the threat to King Herod. Rachael mourns for her children. Rachael died giving life to Benjamin near Bethlehem. Rachael now weeps as all the children of this town are slaughtered. But just as Rachael died giving birth to life. Biblical Marriage

Marriage is defined in Genesis as a man clinging to his wife and the two becoming one flesh. This definition is standardized even in the New Testament by both Jesus and St Paul. Therefore, we have generally said Marriage is defined as one Man and one Woman being joined together in a life long union. Most people think that this Marriage union is created through a man dressed in black and woman dressed in white walking down an aisle to be joined together before some kind of altar.
