eat his body and drink his blood
Question #9: Why would Jesus want you to eat his body and drink his blood?
Why wouldn't he? Now this is a question that no one without faith could ever comprehend. If you do not understand the basic premise of the Bible, you can't grasp this. If you can not see a God who works with his creation, this is impossible. But for those who do believe in the Bible, those who see God working through the course of time, those who see a Being that relates to his people in a special way, this is very simple.
Blood is the life of every living thing. The account of Noah and the ark reminds us of this simple fact. Genesis 9 states, "Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything. But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood." The Blood carries with it the life. Thus, to drink the blood of Christ is to drink his life.
During the Passover the people where instructed to eat the sacrifice. Exodus 12, "They shall eat the flesh that night, roasted on the fire; with unleavened bread and bitter herbs they shall eat it." God has commanded the people to eat the sacrifice. Even most of the sacrifices of the Old Testament, they were eaten by the people. This connected the people with the forgiveness of sins. When you eat the sacrifice, you receive the forgiveness of sins.
Thus, when Jesus institutes the LORD's Supper, he will take these things into account. The body of the sacrifice should be eaten. The Blood of the sacrifice should be drunk for life. Thus, it should make complete sense for Jesus to command us to eat his body and drink his blood.
Any further explanation comes from 1 Corinthians 11. "For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, 'This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.' In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.' For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes."
The only thing left to say is that Jesus is the sacrifice and he wants to come to people as himself. Jesus wants to come to us in his very body and blood. He wants to allow us to see him on a regular basis. Jesus is the sacrifice which we are connected to forever. Thus, I am proud to eat his body and blood for the forgiveness of sins. You just have to see the connection.
