How Old is your Guardian Angel? (Part One)

My Guardian Angel is older than I am and yet younger than I am. This just sounds smart right. But first I have to have a Guardian Angel. Do you have a Guardian Angel? When does one get a Guardian Angel? How does one get a Guardian Angel?

In Luther's Morning and Evening Prayer it reads, "Let Your Holy Angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me." I have heard people say that this is not a Guardian Angel but the Angel of the Lord aka Christ. But this almost discounts the way God uses his angels. If this is Christ that means God only deals with us through himself. But God uses his angels to help people. He also uses his angels to reveal the message of God.

Luther reminds us in more than one place that Angels and Demons are around us. Angels and Demons exist. They are constantly interacting with Humanity. Maybe in the sense of Touched by an Angel but also as invisible parts of Creation. They work to defend us from evil or lead us into evil. Thus, the difference between Angels and Demons.

Now Angels and Demons exist. But do Guardian Angels exist. Are there Angels which are there just to watch over specific people or all people? First do all people get a guardian angel to lead them out of evil? I would contend simply that only Christians receive these Angels. Guardian Angels are there to help Christians out of tough places. These Angels are sent to help the work of the Holy Spirit keeping us in the one true faith. They keep us out of temptation, while not completely away from temptation. These Angels also work to protect us from danger and other evil forces (Demons).

If Guardian Angels only are given to Christians. How does one get their Guardian Angel? Does it come to us at Baptism? Maybe when we find ourselves strong in Faith and then during those weaker times leaves us. Well that would be like the Insurance company taking your premiums an leaving when you have to see the Doctor, which is exactly how it works. Guardian Angels are given to the Elect of God, and at Baptism.

Therefore, to answer my question I think that my Guardian Angels is only as old as I have been a Christian. He became my Guardian angel when I was Baptized thus making me younger than I am. Now that is how long he has been my Guardian Angel. But that does not mean that was when he was created. More on that next time.
