Who is Methuselah?

Who is Methuselah should probably read who was Methuselah, but maybe he is still living in the next step toward our final eschatological reality.

Man of the dart, the son of Enoch, and grandfather of Noah. He was the oldest man of whom we have any record, dying at the age of nine hundred and sixty-nine years, in the year of the Flood (Genesis 5:21-27 1 Chronicles 1:3)

Genesis 5 [21] When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah. [22] And after he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. [23] Altogether, Enoch lived 365 years. [24] Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.
[25] When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he became the father of Lamech. [26] And after he became the father of Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and had other sons and daughters. [27] Altogether, Methuselah lived 969 years, and then he died.

Dying in the Flood would have pointed to his sinfulness. The Oldest man who ever lived still died in the Flood with every other sinner on the face of the Earth. We do not know much about this person. It is interesting that Enoch is the one who is noted to be holy before God and yet his son is the oldest man to ever live.

When God tells us about his jealousy he reminds us that the sins of the Father will be passed down to the third and fourth Generation. He also tells us it will be paced down to the thousandth generation of those who loves me. I do not know whether Methuselah was faithful to God. He might have died before the flood waters rose. Noah must have had to stop working on the ark just to go to his funeral. The only other option is that Methuselah died with all the other sinners in the Flood.

Methuselah in this sense is both blessed by God and washed away by God. You take it from there. Thank you for reading this.

  1. I was told that I was too harsh on Methuselah. Well the truth is I did not want to say that Methuselah was in Hell or Condemned because he died in the same year as the Flood. But it is something for all of us to think about. Are all people swept away in the flood in Hell?
