Two most Holy Days of the Church Year
Many people tell me that Christians only have to show up to church on Christmas and Easter. Christmas and Easter are the highest days of the Church Year. But I have long struggled with that. There are two days in the church year that stand out to me. These days have been celebrated every year since the Ascension of our LORD. I may be wrong but I very much think that these are the two highest days of the Church year. Easter and Good Friday are the highest.
Easter most people will agree has been celebrated since that first night when Jesus showed himself to the Disciples. Even since that morning when they saw the empty tomb. But Good Friday is the day our LORD suffered and died. This day is the day the serpent is crushed. This is the day our sins where paid for. This is the Day of our Atonement. This is the day of our release from sin. This is the Day the price was paid.
Many people tell me that you can not celebrate Good Friday without Easter Sunday but I believe many churches have celebrated Easter Sunday without Good Friday which is a lot harder. I also believe any people teach a doctrine of Good Friday without Easter Sunday. Go to a funeral and do they talk about Easter or Good Friday. The Death or the life to come. Those of you who believe in Heaven as your place of rest live without Easter because Easter gives us the Resurrection.
Good Friday can stand alone as the greatest day in the Church Year, but it really needs Easter to tell the full story. These two days can not stand separate from one another. If you say Easter is the greatest day in the Church Year, then you must first watch Christ die. But neither one of these Days need Christmas. If I would point out an example to prove my point. Look to the Gospel of Mark, where there is no birth and no risen Savior but a death of Christ and an empty tomb. Thanks be to God for the Death of Christ.
