Are you Afraid Yet?

There are many times in the Bible where we are told to Fear the LORD. Even the major figures of the Old Testament Confess that they Fear the LORD. Luther picks up on this by reminding us that we need to Fear Love and Trust in God above all things. I think most people understand Love and Trust, but they really question the thought of Fearing God.

Why would we Fear the LORD? The LORD is a forgiving God. God is Love. Jesus Christ has died for the forgiveness of all our sins. God so Loved the world that he sent his Son not to Condemn the World but to Rescue it. God loves us. God is Merciful. Why should I Fear the LORD?

Scripture tells us to FEAR the LORD so it must be true. And since we really do not want people to be afraid of God the meaning of the word must be different. "Fear" really means reverence or honor. "Fear" can not mean cower in Terror. Well what is the truth?

"Fear" means to be afraid of the LORD. There is more to our reaction than simple God is Great. The LORD our God deserves our respect but he also deserves our Fear. The LORD is an untamed Lion. CS Lewis refers to Aslan as not being a tame Lion. He could lash out at any time. God is truly all knowing and all powerful. Think of what goes through your mind when you were sitting at home after you were in trouble at school. Your father was called home from work because you got in trouble. You are sitting there waiting for your Father to show up. This feeling is the feeling we should have for God. It is more than just reverence or respect it is fear.

Fear of the LORD means that you know his true power. God has the power to take us behind the wood shed at any time. The LORD is a righteous God. He hates sin and you are sinners. The LORD should be feared much more than respected. He is the one who created us and sustains us. The LORD our God has the power to make our lives perfect or further discipline us. We deserve our Father to come home and spank us. But God is still good. Fear the LORD because he is not under your control. There is no one who puts God in a box.

I Fear the LORD the God of Heaven who made the sea and the dry land. I Fear the LORD because I am a sinful human being deserving of death and hell, but thank him and praise him for Jesus Christ my Savior. Therefore, I Fear Love and Trust in God the best I can. Thanks be to God.
