What is Marriage?

Many people have entered into the estate of Marriage over the Years. Most people know the first marriage was between Adam and Eve. Some might even say Adam and Eve lived together before marriage, but I would not count the rib as "together." Marriage was instituted by God. He brings his male and female creation together in the estate of Marriage. The way people become married has changed over the years.

When you look back to Abraham marrying a close relative. You can even look to Cain and Abel marrying their sisters. But one of the things we look back to is Abraham and his relationship with his wife. He is willing to give up his wife to save his life. He even is willing to take on a second wife Hagar in order to have an heir. Abraham still shows his love for his wife when he sends Hagar away to starve.

But a better example of how people were married in the Old Testament is reflected in the story of Jacob. Jacob works for seven years and then with out knowing it marries Leah while he was supposed to marry Rachel. But when you get to the story of the children. It says Leah gives her servant to become his wife. It also says Rachel gives her servant to become his wife. By allowing their servants to sleep with Jacob, they become his wife. This gives the impression that one becomes married by having sexual relations. You can also look to some of the virgin customs Moses tells the people.

What is Marriage? The simple answer is a union. This answer reflects the same thing the Account of Jacob's marriages. If Marriage is a union between one Man and one Women then having sexual relations reflects entering into said union. You may also note that one of the rules to get an Annulment is that the marriage was not consummated. Consummated is a fancy word for saying they did not have sexual intercourse. You can also look to 1 Corinthians 6-7 to see the Connection between Sex and Marriage.

But is this all marriage is? Does this mean I am married to anyone I have sex with? Does this mean all my sexual partners are spouses? I would look to John 4 which states: "Jesus said to her, 'Go, call your husband, and come here.' The woman answered him, 'I have no husband.' Jesus said to her, 'You are right in saying, "I have no husband"; for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.'" Now I do not know what all this together means. But I do know that Marriage is more than just sex. More latter.
