ER Episode Response
I have always wanted to respond to one ER episode from a while back. You may never have seen this episode but you know the story line. Titled Just As I Am the song plays over and over through the episode. One of the main characters has to come out of the closet. She lost her committed life partner. Now her long lost mother comes to Chicago. She looks up her daughter. The turn becomes she is in town for a Baptist Choir tour. When the character now has to tell her mother that she is a homosexual, she faces the reality of the Christian Life.
Now to the point of this turn is the Mother can not accept the lifestyle her daughter has chosen. Now I do not care whether you believe people are born homosexual or chose to be homosexual it does not change it from being a sin. And of course you hear the choir singing Just As I Am. Because we are Christians we need to accept everyone. Thus, we need to accept this lifestyle before God. This is false.
Christians follow their leader. We follow Jesus Christ, the one who built us. The one, who has made us a new creation, calls us to follow him. He is the chief priest and chief Apostle. He tells us to welcome these people. Welcome all sinners to be converted. All of sinners have been called to be faithful. We are to speak the truth always.
The mother needs to tell her daughter I can not accept your lifestyle. This lifestyle is a sin whether you were born that way or chose to actively sin. This is the same with all our sins. We are all born sinful. We are all born inclined to sin. Yet, Christ makes us new. He forgives us all our sins and asks us to follow him.
My response to this episode is clear. All Christians rightly confess as partners and Holy Brothers, God has created us all to be good. He has designed us good. But sin corrupts us even from birth. The use of Just As I Am just reminds us Jesus calls us even from the depths of the sea yet he does not leave us there. He calls us out of darkness into his light. He takes us from death to life.
