the Gospel of Connection
Many people think that Mark is the First Gospel written, I do not agree. But I will give reasons some other time which Gospel I think is written first. I think Mark is one of the last of the Gospels. I am not sure whether I would date Mark after John or not. But either way Mark is a gospel that expects you to know some things already. I have been listening to the Gospel of Mark and I thought about Chapter 8.
"When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up? They said to him, Twelve. And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up? and they said to him, Seven. And he said to them, Do you not yet understand?" (8:19-21) This got me to think about what people are supposed to remember from their reading. What does the Twelve and Seven baskets mean. Where do I find a Connection? Maybe the 12 Tribes and the 7 Nations (Deut. 7:1).
Also in Chapter 13 you get this strange Narration "(let the reader understand)." What does this mean but we are supposed to be able to make a connection. The Reader is expected to have heard this before. The Reader needs to make a connection. Now most commentators make a connection to Daniel 12:11. Daniel 9:27 and 11:31 also have this phrase. But what other things are Abominations in Scripture? These are connections.
Mark is a Gospel where the author expects the reader to put things together. Mark is not a simple writer but a creative writer. He desires to help the reader to see how the Scriptures as a Whole work together. There are connections that need to be made. Lastly, When Jesus talks about all people being salted. "where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched. For everyone will be salted with fire. Salt is good, but if the salt has lost its saltiness, how will you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another."(9:48-50) Is this a bad thing or a good thing? Are we supposed to be salt or be burned by salt? I don't know draw some connections. Thank you.
