Heretics divide the Church
This was an interesting conversation I had. I was talking with an older gentleman about why there are so many division in Christianity. We all have the bible and the words aren't really different from on to another. (Some translations can have very significant differences.) But why are there so many different kinds of Lutherans, Baptist, Methodist, and so on. It was even interesting when he made the comment that the Catholic Church does not have this problem.
How does the Catholic Church keep the pre-Vatican II and Benedictines under the radar? His question was more along the lines of the Catholics can stick with all these child molesters and no new divisions form. This got me to think about the Church of Heretics. Those people who have been weeded out from the true church over the years. In the early church you had an ecumenical council and decided who was right and who was wrong. The Church banned Arius, Nestorians, and others. (Historical point this was the Roman Government who made these bans or exiles.) They left and had their own religious followings which would not be called Christian.
This is part of the reason why Lutherans should call themselves Lutheran Catholics or something. Because we do not believe everything Luther did nor in Luther. We believe in Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We confess what the Evangelical Lutheran Church has confessed since 1580.
Heretics over the years have divided the church. They still are doing this today. The only difference is that the Heretics are not going into exile. There is no central authority that can determine this is a heretic and this is not. Maybe the term Heretic is wrong term, but until someone invents a term to distinguish the Muslim from the Arian from the Semi-Pelagian from the ____, I will use it. Thank you.
