Theotokos (Birther or Bearer of God)
There was once a great dispute over whether you would call Mary the Mother our LORD the Bearer of God. Did Mary truly hold the Godhead in her womb? Was God made to be so small to be in the Virgin Mother? The truth must lead people to discuss the Full Trinity. The Father and the Holy Spirit were not born of the Virgin Mother. They did take Part in the conception, but not the bearing and birth.
It was determined long ago that people could speak of Mary as the Theotokos. She bears God the Son in her womb. We thus should Hold Mary in High esteem. Mary gives birth to the Son of God. The Infant, Zygote, and Fetus in Mary is true God and true Man. This Child is conceived by the Holy Spirit in the Womb of a Virgin.
May we give to Mary the Virgin Mother true praise and Honor because she is the Theotokos. But she should not be worshiped above that which she bore. The Virgin Mother should be honored no less than John, Peter, Paul, Moses, and Abraham. This does not mean we should devote prayers and worship to the Blessed Woman.
Here on Christmas we do greatly to joyfully praise the Virgin birth. But there is a great amount of praise given to Mary at this time of year. We see her leaning over the child. We see her in Nativity plays and Christmas programs. We will hear more about this praise in other sections of the Church Year.
But here the truth about Mary can be portrayed. Mary is given a promise by the Angel Gabriel that she will bear the Son of God. She will do the Impossible. She will become the bearer of God himself, but not the fullness of God yet none the less God. Jesus Christ the Virgin son promised by the Power and Glory of God coming upon this lowly Child. She who was betrothed and considered married to Joseph the Guardian of our LORD. She has a child grow in her womb. This child reaches out even by her voice and presence to John the Baptist and Elizabeth.
The Connection between Mother and Son is great. Mary stories have been told about their relationship. But few go so deep to look at the bond they shared in those 9 months. Because then you have to address whether Mary is the Theotokos. Does she just hold on to a child who will become God? Does she take actual relation to the Child or is it a separate static relationship? This leads also to the question of whether Mary was Sinful. Mary was sinful and yet her womb was never violated. Yet this does not answer the question any greater than knowing the truth that Jesus is without sin at his birth. Jesus is the sinless lamb that is bore by this sinful Child. She bears him on for the 9 months or so we do not truly know. But she bears the bearer of our sins.
Mary is the Mother of our LORD. She bore God in her womb as he is made in the flesh. The Incarnation is a miracle which Mary has the Joy to receive. May we all remember her for her sacrifice and Joy? She was truly a great woman.
