The Visitation
There are two Christmas Visitations. Mary is visited by the Angel Gabriel. This makes for a really good story, but we talked about the Gabriel visit with the Holy Rape. There is also the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth. Here we also find John the Baptist. These two children find themselves even in their Mother's Wombs. John will thus recognize the Lamb of God anywhere.
The First Visitation is a blessing from God that tells us the Holy Child has come. The Angel Gabriel tells Mary that the promise of God is being fulfilled. It no longer has to do with Mary but the Miracle of God. God is coming into creation and dwelling among us.
The Second Visitation gives us a truly blessed spiritual level. Elizabeth hears the Voice Mary and the child in her womb jumps. This word was not of great significance. The presence of another living being, John the Baptist in the womb of Elizabeth jumps for joy at the presence of Jesus in his Mother's womb. We celebrate this joyful celebration with John but jumping and shouting for Joy.
The Christ child has entered into the World. The light has come to dwell in the darkness. Just look at the texts in Luke and we see these are before the birth for Christ. These are not the Celebration of a baby being born but the creation of life. God is entering the created world once again.
God continues to reveal his will to creation. The sending of Angels to Abraham, Israel and others are the reflection of him entering into his creation. These are both physical and spiritual, but how Jesus a.k.a. God enters in body and soul into Mary's womb.
The Visitation is celebrated every year not on the date in the calendar year but on Christmas. The Lord entering into our Lives celebrates all these events, while these events are brought together at one point in time. Christmas is not the celebration of the birth of Christ anymore. Christmas becomes the celebration of many different things.
Mary is a blessed one of God. Mary is a focal point for our celebration of Christmas. Those that visit Mary point to her glory not to God's glory. Thus, we praise her for all these things. Here to take the time to think about the way we honor Mary at Christmas.
Let us celebrate him, Christ and not the intangibles of Christmas. May God bless Mary but may we remember the grace of God in all these things.
