The Song of Simeon
The Song of Simeon is most notably referred to as Nunc Dimintis because of Simeon's immanent Death. Simeon was kept alive until he would see the birth of the Messiah. He would come to the Temple to await the presentation of the Christ Child and upon the presentation of the Christ Child Simeon sings for great Joy.
Simeon steals this child from the child's parents. He lifts the child up as an offering and blesses God. He offers the child to God as an offering of thanksgiving. This child is the Simeon's Salvation. He has come to his people. The Child is the light to reveal the truth to all the earth. This Child is glory of his own people Israel.
Simeon Sings this song of praise and glory for the people Israel. People today sing this song as a reminder that they have seen the real presence of Christ in the Sacrament of the Altar. Simeon thanks God for this great gift that he would be able to recognize the LORD's Messiah. He now can depart this world in peace knowing that salvation is won for him. All of these things have taken place in accordance with God's holy word.
Simeon's Song is a great celebration of life and the spirit in which we all may go with the peace of God. People are told that the peace of God surpasses all understanding but for Simeon all the peace he needed was in his arms as he lifted the Christ Child in the Air. God has truly done great things for his people and this Song is just one way to give thanks back to God.
