The Naming of our LORD
Is his name Christ Jesus or Jesus Christ? The Holy Family is told to name the child Jesus or Yeshua because he will save his people. Jesus means he saves. He is also called Christ or Messiah because he is the anointed one. Kings and Priests were anointed. Both Mary and Joseph are told to name the Child Jesus.
Mary is told by the Angel Gabriel what the Child's name should be. Joseph is told in a dream what the Child's name should be. Both are told the same name for this Child; Jesus. Most parents pick names for their children before they are born. The parents will pick both male and female names unless they are certain of the gender before the Child is born. It is strange that they generally do not call the child by name until they are born. Jesus was called several names before he was born. But upon his conception the Angel Gabriel named the Child. Then eight days after the birth of the child he was officially given the name Jesus.
Isaiah tells us his name is Immanuel or Emmanuel. This name is given to remind the people who this child actually is. Most children are given names which can be very unusual in these latter days. But when you look at the names in the Old Testament or the entire Bible these names have meaning. Check out the Names given to the sons of Jacob or Israel (which also have very accurate meanings). The Children of the prophet Hosea are named as prophecies against the people of Israel. Yeshua as a name has a great meaning for these people and the mission of God.
