Perpetual Virgin

Mary seems to have one sexual partner her entire life. Now that could be God or it could be Joseph. Mary never had sex with Joseph in order to be a perpetual Virgin. This does not explain a lot of things. You must struggle with Jesus' brothers and sisters. Also if Joseph never has sexual relations with Mary are they truly Married.

First let us dwell on the concept of Mary only having God conceive the Christ in her womb. Mary would be blessed for her Virginity but why would she need to be married. Joseph is told to become Jesus and Mary's Guardian. Joseph takes Jesus and Mary down to Egypt. He provides them with a way of life.

The scriptures tell us Joseph did not know her {Mary} until she had given birth to a son. Joseph after her purification then would have known Mary in the Biblical sense. Joseph would have then consummated the Marriage. Thus, Mary was not a perpetual Virgin.

The next problem becomes the brothers and sisters of Jesus. Note these are only half-brothers and half-sisters. "Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?" Are these brothers only sons of Joseph or of Mary and Joseph? Are these Jesus' younger half-brothers? I think they are younger brothers. Because Mary and Joseph would have a healthy Marriage this includes sexual relations.

If Joseph and Mary never had sexual relations they would not have truly been married. This may be a difficult concept to understand but on of the Factors for an Annulment in the Church is never consummating the Relationship. For those of you out there, who are suspect, remember the woman at the well with 5 husbands. The simple weddings made with Jacob by having sex. Thus, anyone you have sex with you are married to in the Biblical sense of things.

Christmas becomes a time when we make Mary the Virgin Mother every year. We may be trying to sing about the Child but a lot of our hymns are really pointing to this Young Maiden who is impregnated by God. The woman is the one of the promise in Isaiah. This is the miracle of Christmas. The Virgin gives birth to a child. Not a very difficult problem for our medical experiments now a day.

Christmas is the celebration of a Holy Rape and the Perpetual Virgin. Maybe not the best way to talk about Christmas but these are just part of our false celebration God incarnates his own Son into a young woman and she is thus always remembered in that point in time. Even Mary at the Cross is remembered as the Virgin or Young Mother who gave birth to a 30 year old dying on the cross.

Continue to Celebrate the Gift of God and not the perpetual Virgin. I would guess this also helps to remind us of the purification of Mary.
