Is Christmas a Celebration of Shepherds

Shepherd language appears many different places in scripture. Ezekiel points to Shepherds leading the people of Israel. Abel was a Shepherd. Abraham and Lot were shepherds at least part of the time. Jacob tends Laban's flocks until acquiring his own. David was a Shepherd boy tending to his father's sheep.

Shepherds also are found tending their flocks in the fields at the point of Christ's birth. The Angel of the LORD appears to the Shepherds and sends them to find the child in Bethlehem. They found the child lying in a manger. The Shepherds are seen as the first ones to come and worship Christ the New Born King.

Jesus, this child is also a Shepherd. He will Shepherd his people and lead them. Jesus tells us, "I am the Good Shepherd." He is the Shepherd that all of the Shepherds desire to be compared to. Other Shepherds lead sheep but Christ leads his people. Jesus even sees the crowds at the feding of the 5,000 as "Sheep without a Shepherd."

Christmas is a time when Shepherds come together. The Good Shepherd is born of the Virgin. The Shepherds around the region of Bethlehem are told of the Birth of the Good shepherd. Jesus is born to lead the people as their Real Shepherd.
