Is Christmas a Celebration of Joseph
Our next figure that we Celebrate a little too much is Joseph. Now some of you maybe thinking what does Joseph, and his trip to Egypt, have to do with Christmas. Wait maybe that does not explain everything are we talking about Joseph the son of Jacob or Joseph the son of Jacob husband to Mary.
Joseph the Guardian of our LORD should be celebrated. But is this what Christmas is all about. We hear the Story of Joseph and him not giving up on Mary. Mary has her beloved husband, the righteous man who should have divorced her and allowed this child to die in her womb. But he is called upon by God to do the more Holy thing. He turns his back on the written LAW and proclaims the Mercy of God.
Joseph the Son of Jacob the patriarch also has a great story but I do not really know how to connect that to Christmas and if you think there is a way then you may want to read up on the Magi.
Joseph and Mary are very much celebrated on Christmas. Mary maybe celebrated more than Joseph but that in itself may become further reason for concern. Joseph is a character very dear to me. He is the one who takes it upon himself to be the Father of the LORD. He teaches Jesus as he grows. Even though Jesus must not have needed much help unlike some false Gospels could tell us. Jesus still like all of us needed a head of the House. I would even go so far to equate this to our need of a Government.
Joseph also provides a great example for all men. He takes Mary as a wife. He receives her with all her flaws. But also must have praised her for her great faith. It is a wish that all marriages could be this great. Husband loves his wife unconditionally and wife serves her husband and God.
Joseph is a valuable character and should be celebrated. But Christmas or the Incarnation really has nothing to do with Joseph and his responsibilities. Joseph had to raise his own Children. He just gets the pleasure to be married to Mary and live with the Messiah as a child.
