The Shepherds of the Field
Shepherds would need to tend their flocks at night fall. They would protect their sheep from wild animals and wolves. The shepherds tended their flocks every night. But what makes this night different from other nights. This night the Christ is born.
The Shepherds have the Angel of the LORD appear to all or many of them. The Angel of the LORD probably appeared high in the sky. He shone himself to these shepherds at a great distance. The People are quite terrified by the appearance of Angels.
The Angel will first tell people, "Fear Not." The people need to be able to pay attention to what the Angel has to say. The Angel tells these Shepherds where they will find the Christ Child. The Angel gives them a sign to find a Mother and child lying in a feeding trough.
The Angel is then joined by a heavenly host to praise God. There could have been a host of Angels proclaiming to small groups of Shepherds and now are joining together. This heavenly host and one might even assume some of the Shepherds join in praising God for the Birth of the Christ Child.
The Shepherds make the journey to the City of David. There in a stable of some kind they located Joseph and Mary. The Holy Family gathered together celebrating their new born baby. The baby was lying in a manger or feeding trough and wrapped in swaddling clothes.
These Shepherds come and worship the Christ Child. They then return to their own houses praising God. The many people of Israel would have heard from these Shepherds.
The text does not tell us from how far away. They were in the fields nearby. But this does not tell us how close is nearby. They probably could make the journey that night while not fearing the lose of their flocks. The Angels also would hopefully have been attending to the Sheep.
These Shepherds carry the message to the people of Israel. The Sheep are kept safe even while the Shepherd is gone. The sheep are protected even when they can't see these shepherds. The Shepherds return and all can join together in great joy.
