Joseph the Guardian of Our LORD

Joseph is not mentioned very much in the Gospels. Some may think this is because he was older than Mary and died. Some have speculated that he could not live with a woman that would not have sex (More comedians say this one). But Joseph is found in Luke when he talks about Jesus' parents leaving the twelve year old behind. Jesus must have been a handful at times.

Joseph knowing what he does from the dream still takes care of the child. He flees with him down to Egypt. He looks for him when he is lost. He must have really loved Jesus reminding him who his real father was.

Joseph still takes on the guardian roll. He provides food for his family. He works as a carpenter. Some may find it interesting that Joseph was he carpenter. Joseph plays the role that was given to him by God (a good example of Vocation). He is the same just man after the Dream. He does his vocation as best as possible.

Don't forget Joseph also had other children some may think not with Mary. Joseph took his role in raising all his children seriously. He did not abandon them or forsake them. He loved them and cherished them. Now I do not know if Joseph died before Jesus' Ministry or Not. But I do know that his role as Jesus' Guardian or Parent was through. Joseph worked hard for his family and shows that he cared for Mary and the child.

But even today when a child ventures off on their own, they are not their parent's responsibility anymore. Mary does not even travel with Jesus. Joseph might have been busy working. Maybe even that is why his Mother and Brothers first come to him. They may come to him to tell Jesus that Joseph has died.

My point is still simple; At Christmas we celebrate Mary and sometimes allow Joseph to be an after thought. But Joseph can be a good example for parents on how to take care of their children. Yet, Joseph is not what we should celebrate. Jesus our LORD is the one who we should give our thanks and praise. Even among our Christmas pageants we still need to point to why this child is different from other children.

Is it just that Jesus did not cry? My guess would be that Jesus cried as a child. Jesus though had two loving parents that would leave or drop everything to search the metropolitan area for him. They would love and care for each other as much as all their children.

Celebrate Joseph the Guardian if you wish. I will still celebrate Jesus who comes to save his people form their sins. He is the one who died and rose again so that we might have life everlasting.
