The Voice of One Calling in the Desert
Isaiah reminds the people of Israel that God prepares the way for his servant. The Voice of a servant reminds the people of what is right. John the Baptist comes from the Wilderness. He points to the one whose sandals he can not untie. John points the people to a man who stands ready to bring Judgment upon the people.
Isaiah and the prophets have always pointed to the coming Servant. This servant of God would both bring salvation and Judgment against the people. This all becomes a celebration of the coming of Christ. Our Lord prepares the way not for his birth but for his ministry. We struggle with the distinction between his birth at Christmas and his entrance into Ministry.
This voice of one calling in the wilderness reflects the prophecies of the Old Testament. God is always placing people in the World to proclaim the presence of Christ. Now we call them pastors or Priests. Before they were called by names like Evangelists, Prophets, Apostles, and Teachers, there are many different people called to proclaim the goodness to those lost in the wilderness.
The desert is a baren place. This place has not bread life but conveys death. People do not go into the desert or Wilderness in order to live. These are generally people who are outcasts or exiles. Here we find the continued proclamation and voices in the Wilderness. The world around us is simply speaking a desert and wilderness.
Isaiah points us to John the Baptist the man in the wilderness. But John the Baptist also points us to all who proclaim the coming of the Christ. At Christmas we celebrate the coming of Christ and Child born in the city of David. We should also celebrate the many that Herald his arrival. This is the Great news of Christ our Lord that he has been born and he will come again.
Isaiah and John help us to celebrate that Christmas gift. This gift we are called to be heralds of the good news. We shout it from the roof tops and the Mountain tops. Here we have the Christmas gift. We have the son of God born to us in the City of David.
Now some how we still need to be reminded of the Voice that calls to each of us in the Wilderness. As we travel through the World of sin we need to be reminded of this Voice. The Good News is proclaimed to the people of the World. Listen to the Voice calling to you.
