The Prophet Elijah
Excuse me again to talk more about John the Baptist. At Christmas time we look to the coming of Christ and even at times to his cousin. John the Baptist yet is the true Elijah. In the Old Testament Elijah is the great Prophet. He calls forth the true Word of God. He stands to defend the true faith even when all stand against him.
The return of the Prophet Elijah is longed for during modern Passover celebrations. I would even urge us all to celebrate the coming of Elijah. This does not mean the coming again of one who is taken up into heaven. Yet, he is seen during the transfiguration.
All of this is good to celebrate and glorify God for his servants. All those who proclaim our Christ should be remembered. The Elijah does come as Jesus says while John the Baptist claims not to be Elijah nor claims any glory for himself. We should celebrate the great wisdom of John the Baptist.
He truly is the voice calling in the desert but also the Return of Elijah. This is always something to celebrate while we must remember at times the truth. John is celebrated very little in the Church. He is thought of at the Baptism of our LORD and slightly during Advent. But these do not celebrate the great Elijah to come. The one who brings the people to see the wickedness of their ways is the Elijah. He is also the one who calls the people to repentance.
Elijah does not just make the sacrifice. He does not only point to the creator during the drought. He does point to the Baptism in the Jordan with Naaman. But even more so he calls the nation to repent of their transgressions. This is the same confession of John the Baptist. Hopefully one would be able to see the correlation between these two great figures in scripture.
Christmas is not the time to celebrate John the Baptist. But his connection to the coming of the Christ is truly Important. We can remember the Ministry of John and how he confesses the coming of the Christ. Let us all take joy in the Lord and the sending of his Son for our Salvation.
Take joy in this great promise of God that has been fulfilled. Continue to thank and praise God for he continues to fulfill his promises.
