Holy Rape

Christians celebrate the gift of Christ. The Word of god comes upon Mary the Mother of our LORD to conceive within her the Holy Child. This 14 year old girl now prepared to Marry Joseph our LORD's Guardian. This young woman finds herself with the joy of a husband. But then the Angel comes to her and disrupts her entire life. She Now will have a child and it is not Joseph's child.

Rape may be a harsh way to say that she was in pregnant by someone not her husband. It may also be a bad way to talk about how young Mary was. But the simplicity of the phrase helps to remind us that even the bad things in life God brings great treasures.

Mary has the Holy Spirit conceive in her womb the Holy Child. She was not forced into some back room are dark aile to be moested by a Roman soldiers. The Holy Spirit comes to her and places his seed into her womb. She does not even know what happened to her until she istold.

There are some textual issues about when she became pregnant. Was it when the word of the Angel spoke the word? Was it before she was married to Joseph? You could use the word of the Angel causing conception in order to show the Power of the Word. You could also say it was before Mary and Joseph were Married because that would mean consummation. Either way it is the Virgin Birth of Christ, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Mary was a young lady of about 14 years of age. Mary could have been a little younger or older. But we are still celebrating Mary being over come by the Holy Spirit to impregnate her. We are still celebrating a teenage pregnancy. Mary is someone who gives birth to a son a few months after the wedding.

I don't know if you can truly call this Holy Rape. But it serves to help us think about all that is going on during the Christmas Story. Jesus is a treasure that comes to the entire world. He comes into this world just like other children. But his conception is a mysterious event.

The way God comes to us is simple. He comes to us by the Word of God spoken and read. God comes to Mary in a similar fashion. He speaks to her through the Angel. He proclaims the message of this Child through John the Baptist leaping in Elizabeth's womb.

Joseph thought to marry her and divorce her quietly because he is a righteous person. This action would only be required not to shame Mary or possibly because he thought Mary had another Lover. She did have another lover it was God. But god tells Joseph that Mary can be with both of them.

Biblical Marriage

Marriage is defined in Genesis as a man clinging to his wife and the two becoming one flesh. This definition is standardized even in the New Testament by both Jesus and St Paul. Therefore, we have generally said Marriage is defined as one Man and one Woman being joined together in a life long union. Most people think that this Marriage union is created through a man dressed in black and woman dressed in white walking down an aisle to be joined together before some kind of altar.
