Visit to Elizabeth

Previously I believe we talked about the conception of Christ. Now we also have to think about the conception of John the Baptist. Mary was a Young woman or girl while Elizabeth was old. Elizabeth reminds me of Sarah laughing about the idea of having a child. But it is hard to laugh at a man who can't talk because he already laughed at the Angel.

Now the real point to make here is that Elizabeth and Zechariah have already come together. The Bible does not describe how active of a sex life these two had. The Bible does indicate that they are still having relations. You could always ask some of the technical questions but I only know what the Bible tells me. Elizabeth is pregnant in her old age and this is a miracle from God.

Mary comes to see Elizabeth because all things are possible with God. Mary may have questioned the Angel. She may even have left the Angel still doubting. But once she sees Elizabeth and her six plus months pregnant no more doubts. Now Mary may still have some worries about her future as a Virgin who is pregnant. But she still will sing about how blessed she really is.

This visit becomes very important and not just because of the sung. Churches all over the world sing this song all year. But we are more interested in John the Baptist. John leaps upon hearing the voice of Mary. This is the connection to our Christmas celebration John does not first meet Jesus at Baptism or a couple days earlier. John the Baptist leaps because he knows he is in the presence of God. The Mother of our LORD is in his presence even though they are separated by uterine walls.

I know that Pastors and theologians know this factual account. But I do not think we really point this out to our people. It is easy to talk about it when others bring it up. But do we talk about the blessing of our LORD being knit together in Mary's womb like John was knit together in Elizabeth's womb. This can be a great teaching opportunity.

Thus, we look at the visit to Elizabeth as emphasizing the Incarnation of God the Son. Jesus Christ is the LORD our God. He is also true man in every way except for original sin or actual sin. Christ is both God and Man even while in the womb of Mary. John the Baptist also is the guy jumping up and down at the River pointing to the Lamb of God. He jumps in his mother's womb pointing to the Lamb of God.
